I have looked at a lot of home energy monitors and the UK models generally look much better than what has been generally available in the US.
I tried to buy the CurrentCost (both eBay and Amazon.com UK) and was not able to ship to US. I could use an adapter to change the plug so I think it could probably work for me with possibly an additional sensor cable. Anyone ever try to use in USA? Any luck or advice?

Many US houses have a 220v supply from the street (used for washing machines and stoves/cookers) so it may be possible to use a currentcost there.

The pins under the batteries are, I believe, for programming, setting up and calibrating the device in the factory; they connect to the processor (a PIC16F689) amd are not user configurable.

According to CurrentCost, their software will be available, for free, mid to late August.
Today is August 20, so hopefully it will be available very soon

Hi Ben, That's for a great script. I used it on my NSLU2. I modified it slightly to work with the newer CurrentCost - the Envi CC128. Baudrate and XML are slightly different. Files are here: http://www.plentyways.com/blog/2009/09/how-i-created-my-home-energy-monitor/ Thanks again! Sam

Just had my Current Cost device delivered to me here in Germany by friends. Becasue of the way they do things here, I cannot get at the cable between the meter and the fuse box as requested by the instruction book. Does anybody know if the clamp can be placed elsewhere? The supply comes in over the roof and I can get at it there i.e. before the meter. Would that be a problem?

The clamp has to go around the live wire only. The cable from the utility may also include the neutral in which case I wouldn't count on the data you get out. You might be able to get at the live wire feed as it enters the fusebox ?

I have used the currentcost for a while, but its info is limited. I have used an arduino to measure the voltage and frequency from an AC-AC step down transformer, and was hoping to use a currentcost current clamp to measure current, so that I could see frequency, peak voltage, rms voltage, power factor, real and imaginary power. I had expected the output from the two cores of the currentcost clamp to be a shifted sine wave with amplitide p[roportional to current (M di/dt), but on hooking up to a scope got a very noisey signal with regular spikes. I don't want to hack open the sensor casing if I don't have to... anyone got any ideas what interface the sensor needs?

Hello, I was wondering of anyone had tried/thought of having an arduino store readings from the currentcost meter on a usb key which could then be downloaded periodically to a PC, thereby keeping the 6 sec. level of detail without having to connect to the meter every 2 hours. http://www.arduino.cc/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1198101095/1 talks about interfacing to a USB key and http://e.inste.in/2008/06/16/interfacing-the-currentcost-meter-to-an-arduino/ talks about interfacing an arduino to the meter, seems that there's still a bit of linking to be done but its seems doable. Anyone out there feel up to it ?? Best regards / Colm

I believe that the boffins at current cost are bringing out a new unit. Anyone had a preview ?

Looks nice, like a PDA in a cradle. Anyone know what new features it might support

Hi, Has anyone compared the accuracy of this unit with other similar products / reality? Obviously these units can not measure power factor, using only a current clamp, but I notice that, for example, the currentCost measures significantly different values from an eco-eye unit. I have a plug-in power meter somewhere that I might use to compare the two. I would imagine also that innacuracies would be non-linear, probably being worse at low current draws and better at higher...

RE: CurrentCost accuracy

HI
I had a problem with my Southen Electric unit in that it would not work on dual tarrifs. So SE sent me a new unit. I now have two sensors connected to the same tail from the meter but there is a 25% difference between the two. As an example: the first sensor reads 3.03 Kw the second reads 2.74 Kw the first sensor reads 412 watts the second reads 302 watts
I have moved the sensors apart and have even moved one to the other leg i.e one on the live and one on the neutral. Thinking they maybe upseting each other, I dissconected the first one but the second sensor still read low.
It would appear that the sensor is most sensitive at the bottom of the clamp i.e the part futhest from the claw opening. So I now have the sensor that reads the highest hanging on the tail by the top of the clamp. The other one is attached so that the tail is up against the bottom of the claw. Now they are within 10% of each other. 604 watts and 579 watts.
Having told Current Cost of the above, they sent me one of theirs out of good will. That too read a differently from the two above. They DID say it is to be used as an "indication" and NOT as a measurment. The idea being, what ever the consumtion is one day / week you should try and use less the next.

The transmitter unit has two sockets, one either side of the clamp input, which I assume are for the additional meter clamps. Also under the batteries are what look like a group of pins for jumpers or and additional connector. Anyone have an idea what these are for?

I'd guessed the two sockets were for the additional channels the manual talks about. Allowing two more independent sets of reading (Economy 7, PV monitoring etc or as you say three-phase). It was more the internal connection under the batteries I was interested in as I was hoping it would allow me to bypass the wireless connection and get to the raw readings etc. This is because even with the receiver adjacent to the transmitter (via an external wall, it still drops out every now and then for 1-3 Mins. Meaning I have to average the data over the blank periods in the application on my linked PC!
Hope you've received yours now. Thanks and good luck
